
Muskegon Community College is gearing up to host the fall conference on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. The theme of the conference is Aquatic Environments. This conference is designed to strengthen the links between our Community Colleges and High School Teachers, who are being invited to attend, and to improve student learning and networking among biology teachers. Students are also invited to attend.

Friday, Oct. 24 - Stevenson Center for Higher Learning

4:30-5:30pm: Presentation - Creative Assessment in the classroom and Aquatic Birds, Dr. Kathy Winnett-Murray, Hope College. This talk will be in the 1200 complex.
6 pm: Bus transportation to Fricano's Pizza. Meet in lobby of Stevenson Center.
6:30-7:30pm: Dinner Fricano’s Pizza on Muskegon Lake. MCCB General Membership Meeting after dinner.
8-9pm: If desired, take a stroll on the bike path along Muskegon Lake.
9pm: Bus transportation back to Muskegon Community College

9-10am: Presentation - Phylogenetics: The "E" word in disguise, Dr. Keith Crandall, Brigham Young University (Room 1100)
10:05-11am: Choice of speakers:
A) Aquatic Plant Communities and exotics, Dr. Lisa Huberty, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (Room 1224).
B) Expansion and food web implications of the Quagga mussel in the Great Lakes, Thomas Nalepa, Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, NOAA (Room 1222)

Homer Nowlin Endowed Chair of Water Research in the Department of Fisheries and

1-1:55pm: Presentation - Exploration of submerged sinkhole ecosystems in Lake Huron, Dr. Bopi Biddanda, GVSU.
2-2:55pm: Presentation - Areas of Concern in the Great Lakes, Dr. Rick Rediske, GVSU.
3-3:30pm: Tour of AWRI facility.
3:30-4:30pm: Presentation – Teaching Aquatic Science on a Research Vessel, Dr. Janet Vail, GVSU.
4:30pm: Transportation back to Muskegon Community College. Meeting evaluations filled out and turned in.
Cost of Meeting: $40 for MCCB members and Muskegon Community College
students [NOTE: students may attend the lectures for free, but must pay $40 if
they want meals]; High School Biology Educator $25 (subsidized by MCC); $50 for all others.
